Hokusai's Great Wave redrawn in the visual language of vaporwave — the pink and aqua palette, the horizontal line gradients, the palm trees and the striped sunset — all contained within a perfect circle on a clean white ground. The Japanese kanji for 蒸気波 sits quietly at the bottom left. The composition resolves the contrast between its two sources, which are further apart in sensibility than they appear, and the result reads clearly and sits lightly on a wall.

Product Details

The Great Vapour Wave sets Hokusai's 1831 composition — the most reproduced image in the history of Japanese woodblock printing — within the visual idiom of vaporwave: the palette and graphic logic of digital nostalgia that made its own formal language from 1980s grid graphics, neon colours, and sunset gradients. The wave is redrawn in aqua and deep blue-purple. Mt. Fuji in the background becomes pink. A yellow sun sits above it. Palm trees appear to the right.

The palette — pink, aqua, purple, yellow — is specific to the aesthetic being referenced. The white ground outside the circle and the clean circular containment give the piece its composure. It knows what it is, and it doesn't push the point.

The circular format is generous to different wall situations — it reads well in a space that might feel awkward with a full-bleed composition. It will stop a conversation when someone spots both references, which happens regularly.
